Questions About the Event?
Whether you're competing for the first time, bringing your family to spectate, or considering sponsorship, we've compiled answers to the most common questions about Battle in the Big Country. This page covers registration, competition rules, event day logistics, and general tournament information. Registration & Fees:

Your first division is $45 plus one new unwrapped toy that will be donated to Toys for Tots. Additional divisions are $10 each when you use coupon code TOYS at checkout.
Competitors must bring their unwrapped toy on the day of the event so it can be collected during weigh-ins.

All registration is handled online through Smoothcomp at https://smoothcomp.com/en/event/25743. Registration closes before the event, so sign up early to guarantee your spot.

No. All registration must be completed online before the registration deadline (November 19, 2025). Day-of registration is not available.

Yes. You can register for multiple weight classes and both gi and no-gi divisions within your age and belt category.
Weight Classes & Divisions:

We follow official IBJJF weight classes from Rooster (122.5 lbs max) through Ultra-Heavy (215.1 lbs+). View the complete list on our Registration page.

Weigh-ins begin at 7:30 AM on event day. You must weigh in wearing your gi.

You will forfeit your division with no refunds or weight class changes allowed on event day.

Yes. Competitors are grouped by IBJJF age categories from youth through masters divisions.

No. You must compete at your current BJJ belt rank. Judo black belts must register in the appropriate blue belt division.
Rules & Competition:

Battle in the Big Country follows official IBJJF competition rules. You can review or download the complete IBJJF rulebook from our Registration page.

Match duration varies by age and belt level, ranging from 2 to 10 minutes following IBJJF standards (see page 41 of the IBJJF rulebook).

Illegal techniques vary by belt level. Review the IBJJF rulebook for your specific division's prohibited moves (see page 29 of the IBJJF rulebook).

Points are awarded for positions held for 3 seconds based on IBJJF standards: takedowns (2 points), guard passes (3 points), mount/back control (4 points), etc. (see the Scoring section of the IBJJF rulebook starting on page 15).

Ties are decided by advantages, then penalties, then referee decision based on aggression and submission attempts.
Gi & Equipment:

Your gi must meet IBJJF specifications: white, royal blue, or black only, proper sleeve and pant length, clean and in good condition (see uniform requirements starting on page 35 of the IBJJF rulebook).

Yes. All uniforms undergo inspection before weigh-in to ensure IBJJF compliance.

Bring your competition gi, valid photo ID, one new unwrapped toy, mouthguard, water, and any personal gear like tape or extra gis.

Follow IBJJF uniform guidelines in the rulebook regarding undergarments and rash guards.

Soft braces are permitted. Hard braces or guards that add volume are prohibited.
Event Day Logistics:

Competitors should arrive by 7:30 AM for weigh-ins. Spectators can enter when doors open at 8:00 AM.

Yes. Free parking is available on-site at Dodge Jones Sports Center.

Competition runs throughout the day with divisions progressing based on bracket size. Plan to stay until your bracket completes.

The event will take place at the Dodge Jones Youth Sports Center, which is located at 1042 Loop 322, Abilene, TX 79602

Yes. Designated warm-up areas will be available for competitors throughout the day.
Spectators:

Yes. Spectators are welcome starting at 8:00 AM. Tickets are available at the door.

Ticket prices will be available at the door. All proceeds benefit Toys for Tots.

Absolutely. This is a family-friendly event welcoming spectators of all ages.

Yes. Photography and video recording for personal use is permitted.

Food trucks and vendors will be on-site throughout the event.

No. Vendors must bring all necessary equipment as outlets are not available at booth locations.

Setup times and booth locations are provided upon registration confirmation. Arrive early before doors open at 8:00 AM.
Toys for Tots:

Bring one new, unwrapped toy appropriate for children of any age. No toy guns or violent toys are permitted.

Toy donations are required for registration completion. Bring your toy to check-in.

Yes. Monetary donations can be made via PayPal using our QR code or at the event.

All toys are donated to the Marine Toys for Tots program serving the Abilene and Big Country area.
